Importance of Problem Solving and Working with Others

Introduction

In every field, the importance of problem solving skills cannot be over looked. This is one of the most desired skills among employees. Even during the employment phase, these skills are checked in order to select the best candidate for the job. The problem lies with those who possess technical knowledge of computer systems. These people are considered to have limited problem solving skills because their work is more technical in nature and their education is limited to the scope of their work. Maths and science graduates, on the other hand, have a greater insight into problem solving skills which helps them to gain reputable jobs (McCain, pp. 49-86).

Problem-solving is a process that includes the identification, analysis, and solving problems. The main idea of problem-solving is to find out and implement the best approach to solve the problem by overcoming every obstacle. Problems may be of two types, one that is repeated and one that is not repeated (Styles, pp. 12-25). For problems that are repeated, a solution is determined and implemented each time the problem arises. On the other hand, if the nature of the problem changes each time, a more reactive approach is needed.

Analysing and determining the solution to problems is not an easy task as it requires the problem solver to analyse various aspects of the problem and determine the solution. The work of the problem-solver does not end with the determination of the solution. He also has to predict the future outcomes and devise a strategy whereby the best results can be achieved by the solution.

In a work environment, problem solving is an important task but it can get complicated at times. The best solution is to work as a team in order to determine the solution through discussions. Working as a team improves the efficiency as the work is divided among several people (Wang and Kathleen, pp. 61-79). Apart from this, the quality of the outcome also improves as several are able to combine their thoughts and ideas in order to produce the best results. In short, working as a team reduces the time taken to accomplish a task and at the same time improves the quality of the work performed.

The importance of problem solving and working with others cannot be overlooked. When people start to work as a team, the solution of problems become easier and the chances that the outcome will be successful increases. Whenever more than one person works on a problem the number of possible solutions increases which makes it easier for the problem to be solved. Despite the fact that problems can be solved easily by working in groups, individuals should also learn to solve problems on their own. Sometimes the solution is required immediately and there is no time to call upon a discussion. In these circumstances, the individual's judgemental attributes come into play. These attributes are the factor that determines the problem solving capacity of individuals.
