Introduction

The paper intends to expound the key theoretical concepts and themes based on understanding the concept of interior design. These themes aim to develop the in depth understanding, skills in research, historical contexts which consequently broaden the understanding of the discipline. This paper would extenuate the key themes such as class, gender, nostalgia, representation, taste and consumerism which will help in articulating the contemporary interior design practice within an historical as well as theoretical context (Taylor and Preston, 2006). However, the study of interior designing will introduce the historical and current contexts of arts, craft and design. This is a specialized programme with the underlying benefits of studying the interior designing such as it would escalate the knowledge, understanding and skills, help in developing the creative ideas based on those themes, increase the capacity of research and analysis. In short, the core objective of this study is to develop the learner's skills and knowledge pertaining to art and design based on the exploration of the specified themes.

Nostalgia

Nostalgia design is the most influential trend that has recently brought the revolution in to the world of interior designing. The nostalgia holds the essence of feelings rather than the look. It aims to hold the meaning for the persons who own it by helping them to conjure up his past memories. It assists in escaping from the stresses and serve as the temporary refuge from the worldly responsibilities which allow them to fly back in to the care free times of their lives while reminisce them about the good memories of life. According to the Design Director of Dulux Design Service, Marianne Shullingford, the nostalgic look plays the role of antithesis of mass market which is intensely personal that helps in creating the room or the house that is unique as well as heartfelt (Jenkinson, 2010). Nostalgia design capture the feelings of past with the fleeting memories of one's childhood, family gathering and the happy times which derive the sense of relaxation with the connection of past golden times (Pereira, 2012). According to Woodham (1997) the nostalgia is the twentieth century design which plays an immense role in the production as well as consumption of design which is considered as the sentimental longing for the past times that is also bound up with the notions or traditions. The nostalgic designs are the great representatives of the old world sophistication which never goes out of fashion that are the illustrations of classical interior design that continues to affirm the past while at the same time moving towards the future.
