Introduction

The novel “Heart of Darkness” was written by Joseph Conrad. This novel is presented by the author in the form of a frame narrative. The novel “Heart of Darkness” was first published in the form of a three part serial in Blackwood's Magazine in February, March and April, 1899. The core idea of this novel revolves around the moral corruption and moral ambiguity. The main idea of this novel is presented effectively by the author through the characters involved in this novel. The thesis statement that would give us a brief over view of this novel is “The indefinable fear of the oppressor paves ways for the brutality to rise in the region, as well as the hearts and minds of the natives.”

It is observed in this novel that Marlow is the central character of this novel whose life changes after his journey into the heart of darkness. The second main character is Mr. Kurtz, who is a remarkable man, who is viewed as a poet, artist and orator. Two other important characters are the Accountant and the Russian Harlequin. The central subject of the novel revolves around the characters of Marlow and Mr. Kurtz. In this novel, the author Joseph Conrad has demonstrated all the characters in the novel being into a black despair. It is also viewed in this novel that no one was saved or guided to the right path by an enlightened man. The novel shows that Conrad contrasted the viewpoint of darkness with the light in the society, but the novel demonstrates that the weakened foundation of light is crumbled by the strength of darkness.
