Compare and Contrast the Character

Louis Mallard is the major characters of the story “The Story of an hour” by Kate Chopin. Her character envelops a mixture of happiness and grievance. It can clearly be observed when she got the news of her husband's death. She was overjoyed with the fact that she could lead her life without any domination. The sudden feeling of independence was a blessing for her because the author has given the clues about her unhappy married life in which her husband never look upon her with love and always dominated her life considering it to be his right (Chopin, 1894). Her character from an old, weak and vulnerable suddenly changed into a joyful, young and energetic woman who was having the elixir from her window which was showing the new sunny days of her upcoming life.

On the other hand, in the “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood, there are many characters among which Mary can be picked up as a female protagonist. Her character changes with the stories. Sometimes she is shown as middle class a woman who is loyal to his husband and takes care of him despite his self-centered personality (Atwood, 1983). Other times she is shown as a young girl who is married to an old man and looking for another young person to live her life with. Her life is also regulated by the male characters in her life.
