Hamlet

Introduction

A disaster can be clear as a literary work in which the main character or characters suffer severe grief, particularly as a result of a moral weakness, tragic flaw, or inability to cope with unfavorable conditions. William Shakespeare's play Hamlet is a well known play that falls under the genre of a misfortune because it's very dramatic, contains numerous murders and has an overall suspenseful atmosphere throughout the play. Hamlet follows the elements of a classic Shakespearean tragedy such as the tragic hero, a tragic flaw, and a tragic story. Hamlet is the quintessential tragic hero, he begins with good intentions but by the end he does not survive to see the full outcome of his actions. Hamlet possesses positive traits and demonstrates those traits throughout the play but Hamlet was incapable of defeating his own greatest flaw, his inability to take action which led to the demise of not only himself, but many around him. The third element is the tragic story, which leads up to and results in the death of the hero, the suffering that usually befalls the hero is unusual and disastrous. Hamlet follows all elements of a classic Shakespearean tragedy with Hamlet as the tragic hero, his tragic flaw, and the tragic story that results in death.

Tragic heroes often begin at a high position of nobility, as Hamlet is the prince of Denmark; he has a lofty position to fall from. When he is first introduced in Act 1 Scene 2, He is a young prince who is mourning the death of his father, only to discover the recent betrayal of his mother. Hamlet is visibly dealing with mixed feelings of immense grief, anger and frustration.

Hamlet's Feelings

Hamlets display of strong emotions in his words show the anguish he is feeling about what is happening around him, allows him to become a very human-like character and the audience begins to develop sympathy for Hamlet. Hamlet holds all the positive traits that are needed to be a tragic hero. Hamlet took a big risk of going to England because if his plan did not work properly, he could have been carried out. This demonstrates that Hamlet is a brave and daring man. He is also very loyal, the loyalty he has to his father is clear in his resentment towards his mother and Claudius. Hamlet is also a very intelligent person, he decided to fake insanity to get information from Claudius. Hamlet is a deep thinker and over analyzes every situation he was put in, leading to his downfall.

Hamlet continued to fake insanity even after being sure that Claudius murdered his father, because he didn't want to actually follow through with his murder. Hamlet was provided with many chances to take revenge and murder Claudius but continued to wait for the perfect moment.
