Introduction

The field of Graphic Arts is one of the modern careers which are currently on the boom. It is a relatively new career, which is created thanks to the modern technological advancements. Graphic Arts is an umbrella term which covers a variety of subjects underneath its wing. Some of the subjects include, Typographer, Visualizer, Concept Artist, Web Designer, Photo Manipulator, Illustrator and etc.

The two careers in Graphic Art, which retain the potential of considerable growth and at the same time are financially sound, include Concept Artists and Web Designers.

Concept Artist

A concept artists' job description includes creating concept artworks for a variety of different subjects like gaming, cartoons, mascots and even architecture. The term 'concept art' means creating a piece of artwork, which depicts a concept. It does not have to be real or physically possible, that is why it is referred to as a 'concept art'. It serves as a model for the other members of the organization/team to understand what the leader or the artist has in mind. It works as the foundation or groundwork for the creation of anything new or innovative.

The Concept Artist field itself further branches into two categories, i.e. 2D Concept Artist and a 3D Concept Artist. The former is a part of a team of digital artists but he doesn't use technology for his own work.

2D Concept Artist

The Concept artists' job is to give the team a design of the visual elements of a character, of a game, a level design of a game, model of any item, design of a poster, etc. Even though this is the first step when it comes to the creation of any artwork, model or level for a game and so is most important as it works as a drawing board out of which very few things appear (as they are created initially) in the final output. There is a belief that concept artists enjoy the most freedom in terms of design when creating concept art, however the measure of a good concept artist is taken from the way he combines the pre-existing ideas of his colleagues and depicts it in such a way that it becomes new and fresh. For this reason it is imperative that the artist be flexible enough in his drawing style, to be able to incorporate the signature style of the company, he/she is employed at.

The concept artist is also responsible for creating storyboards of advertisements, cut scenes, etc, so it is imperative that they should understand practicality (eliminate unnecessary details in a scene) and budgeting.

A 2d concept artist could expect around $58,500 per year however, the salary might increase to $68,000m depending on the experience of the artist.
