Genteel Women during the British Regency Era

Introduction

To begin with, it is important to explain all the important and necessary terms for clarity of concepts before progressing with further discussion. Starting with the main underlying concept behind this paper Genteel, describes that quality in an individual, mostly referred to women, having an aristocratic upbringing or background. These individuals hail from the higher echelon of the society and their mannerisms and behaviors are reflective of their high social class, in their interaction and conversational norms. In addition, these individuals were considered free of any rudeness, indecency in their behavior and mannerism by the society in large, only because of their refined upbringing and social status (www.merriam-webster.com). In addition, all such individuals were also rather accused of coming across a portraying a fake façade to be able to fulfill the social obligations that were attributed to them by the society's norms and cultures, which can also be termed as petty on many accounts.

In addition, these individuals possessed unique linguistic skills that may very well be considered as 'old-worldly' today, but the nuances of their mannerisms, the proper courtesy and respect shown by both men and women is something that is strongly desired today. That they possessed and showed is something that has remained unique and worthy of that era alone.

The Regency Era

Knowles (2012) describes The Regency era to last for only a period of nine years from February 1811 to January 1820. The main reason for this so was due to the dilapidating mental health of King George III, after he was medically deemed unfit to rule, he was soon replaced by his son George, The Prince Regent, after passing of the Regency Act. Thus, with the King George III dead in 1820, the regency era came to its end and his son the Prince Regent became King George IV.

Although, on the contrary it is also noted that the Regency era, is as suggested by its terminology name, refers to the life of the Regent Prince itself. This era signifies the change or the transition to certain level of modernism, extravagance and liberalism as compared to the frugal lifestyle of his father. Thus, due to this Knowles (2012) feels and states that the real regency era, in her opinion, begins at the start of 1788 when King George IV became a regent and lasts up to his death in 1830.
