Introduction

The movie Forest Gump is more than just a movie. It is a tale of how an odd young man went above and beyond what was asked of him, time and time again; and did so to bring happiness to those around him. His undying love for a single woman throughout life is probably the sweetest aspect of the movie, combined with Tom Hanks' uncanny ability to portray the character in such a way that the audience is left mesmerized. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the music used specifically in the scenes in 123:55 - 127:12. This will be done by first observing the sounds and music, followed by an analysis, reflection and before concluding, a synthesis.

Observation

The brief four minute selection does not have much music for one to describe. With that being said, the absence of can be said to be adequate. As one knows quite well that forcing music into a part of a production where it is not necessary can result in an unwanted feeling and relation from audiences. The absence of music allows viewers to relate to what is being spoken, to the back ground sounds and to what is being said.

As far as the music is concerned, the selected scene uses instrumentals based on the piano and a general orchestra. Gradually building and in a light hearted tone create the sensation of achievement, satisfaction and fulfillment. This fits in quite well with the scene and allows viewers to relate to the happenings much better. In the parts that lack music, one can hear Gump and Jenny talking, while in the background there is noise from rustling leaves and children playing.
