Kantian Ethics

This theory has been proposed by Immanuel Kant, a theorist who opposed utilitarianism. He had a belief that there are many kinds of actions, such as, lying, theft, checking an individual's profile and encroaching upon his or her privacy and etc, which are not allowed. These actions are prohibited in cases where executing these actions may bring more happiness and fun in comparison to the alternative. If Kantian theory has to be followed, then a person should answer two questions, before carrying out an action. The first question is, (i) Can I rationally will that everyone act as I propose to act?. If the answer is no, then the action should not be carried out. The second question is Does my action respect the goals of human beings rather than merely using them for my own purposes?. If the reply is negative, the task should not be performed (Johnson, 2004).

Deontological moral theory is one of the examples of Kant's theory. Deontological theory argues that, the rightness or wrongness of actions is not based on their outcomes, but on whether they fulfill our obligations and duties (Slideshare.net, 2013).This theorist had a belief that there exists supreme principle of morality. He termed it as The Categorical Imperative (CI), which serve as a basis in determining our moral duties. Based on the case study provided, I will be inserting the case into the definitions and theories of Kant.

Imperative: It is a command, which should be followed. In this case, it means Laura has to follow the rules of the company, before recruiting Jack..

Categorical imperative: Following commands unconditionally. Over here, it implies Laura should also consider ethical considerations in regards to viewing Jack's profile on social media. Also, Laura should not hide any relevant data about jack from the company. There is a possibility that Jack might sue the company, if he becomes aware of it. Also, Jack might change his views of joining the company, as he might consider as it is unethical.

Link between CI and morality: Morality is connected with categorical imperative as morality is something that you are ordered by it. Also, it is such that I can not claim or say that it does not apply to me.

Working of the categorical imperative: There are 2 major formulations that CI has. It is the Kant's claim both of them describe the same thing. The first of these is CI, whereas the second one is very easy in terms of understanding.

Universal law formula: "Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law [of nature] (Philosophy.lander.edu, 2013).
