Introduction

Environmental psychology is not a new concept for many people. Some believe that it is a new concept that emerged due to the advent of globalization and its consequences on the environment. But the environmental psychologists believe that the concept was there but no one really felt the need to understand it. Environmental Psychology is a sub domain of psychology that is concerned with the relationship between the human beings and their environment. It is not only the natural environment that this field of psychology is concerned with, but it is also the social settings, informational environments and learning environments that are covered by this particular field of psychology. The paper will discuss about the theoretical development of the subject and how it is being seen as a discipline that is aimed at solving environment-related problems.

Discussion

Its conception is believed to have occurred in 1970s. Since then, the field has served and showed its commitment for the solution of problems that are of complex nature and have become problematic for the human beings. Environmental Psychologists, through the help of the theories of environmental psychology, not only have solved local environmental problems but also have proposed solutions for complex problems encountered globally (Straub, 2007). In order to solve the problems that may arise from the human-environment relationship, the environmental psychologists have developed models that can help in predicting the conditions that are best for the human beings to act in an appropriate way.

The models would help the environmental psychologists to predict conditions in which human beings will show positive attitudes. It is beneficial for the people to understand the reasons behind the lapse in human behavior with respect to performance and productivity.
