Effects of Bullying

Introduction

Bullying occurs when a child or group of children deliberately controls others through intimidation whether verbal, emotional or physical. Signs of bullying include threats, physical aggression, and exclusion from the game or activity, teasing or physical appearance or insulting someone's race. Bullying among girls is usually verbal such as humiliation or isolation, and male children tend to be more physical when they bully. Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society. But it must remember that although it is common in all economic and social settings, bullying is not a normal part of childhood. The longer bullying persists, the more difficult it is to find a solution and the more reliable the physical or mental impairment of the affected children and adults (Pellegrini et al, pp. 216-224).

Discussion

There are consequences in the short and long term in the victim, such as feelings of fear and helplessness. They may also feel ashamed of being treated badly. They may develop phobias or depression due to stress. Children may become self-destructive or aggressive toward others. Some consequences for the child include intimidating to be rejected by their peers, and their social and learning skills diminish (Adams and Lawrence, pp. 4-13). At the absence of intervention from parents or teachers, it can increase aggressiveness. Bullying not only affects the victims or intimidating children, but also to observers. Moreover, it can affect the environment of the nursery, school or neighborhood, making children feel unsafe in places where they live and learn. Observers of bullying can become unsafe, may feel anxious and afraid of being bullied too (Blazer, pp. 1-16). They may feel confused, not knowing how to react. They may feel guilty for not being able to stop bullying. They should be encouraged to report bullying.

Bullying not only affects the victim psychologically but also affects their health. Initially, it's just a slight feeling queasy stomach with permanent feeling of insecurity, which later leads to severe stomach and intestinal problems. Added headache syndromes, initiating and maintaining sleep, neck and back pain, as well as anxiety, depression and automatic thought processes that put the body in a state of stress, depression, aggression and helplessness are often the consequences.
