CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Research
Historical English language texts referencing the concept of being aware of dreaming while dreaming were analyzed. Literature published between 1770 and 1920 was included in the study. A considerable amount of previously unrecognized material on lucid dreaming was discovered. Histographical analysis indicated a discernable evolution in the development of the lucid dreaming concept. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Thomas Reid and James Beattie, two prominent Scottish Common Sense philosophers, popularized the idea of becoming aware of dreaming as a way to end disagreeable dreams.
In the second half of the 19th century, this preventative role of lucid dreaming was extended to include discussions of consciously avoiding or curtailing presumably harmful nocturnal emissions occurring during dreams. Expansive views of sleep entered the mesmeric literature in the early 19th century, at approximately the same time that transcendent views of dreaming were discussed by Romantic authors. However, neither movement prominently featured the idea of being aware of dreaming while dreaming.
References to being aware of dreaming could also be found in theological and chronological discussions. Around the middle of the 19th century, a few spiritualist authors began to write about lucid dreaming as transcendent and supernatural phenomena.
