Cost Effectiveness of DHS/ ATF/ FBI War on Drugs
Introduction
Various challenges have been faced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for having war on drugs. The war on drugs has long been started by the government authorities to cater different problems with regard to the drug abusers in various part of the world. The drug abusing does not incur the cost on individuals involved into it but also on the whole society through the chain of cycle that include parents, siblings and other relatives of the drug abuser.
The President of the United States Richard Nixon declared drugs war on 17th of June 1971. However, on 14th May 2009, after thirty eight years to the official war on drugs started, the Gil Kerlikowske from the Obama's administration declared in the interview that the analogy used by the administration of President Nixon “War on Drugs” has come to an end. However this changing in the word of the “War on Drugs” by the Obama's administrations had no significant correspondence and did not bring any change to the policy of drugs or restricting like that of the previous governments. When the “War on Drugs” was started by the President Nixon, most of the individuals thought of the punishment being given to the drug abusers. Moreover, it was thought that the strategy for controlling drug abusing would be used by the President. However what he meant from the “war on drugs” was increased funding for solving out the health problems related to the drug abuse over the strategies of punishment. The cost that has been incurred on “war on drugs” program started by the President Richard Nixon was of approximately $155 million. The President Nixon requested for this amount with Congress along with the starting of his program on drugs. Out of this amount, more than two thirds of this amount was marked for the rehabilitation and treatment purposes of drugs. The changes that have been occurred in the political situation of the United States with respect to the usage of drugs from Nixon's presidency up till now could be analysed from the policy development. The dynamic surroundings of the United States with respect to the change in drug policy are an important factor that should be noticed from the drug abusing perspective. The administration of President Nixon definitely stressed the punishment in its message however the main aim was that on the public health for which various resources were needed.
