Corporate Social Responsibility Policy

Introduction

Decision makers in a corporate context, as anywhere else, are liable for the consequences of their decisions. Where the decisions are within the legal authority of the decision maker, liability for the consequences remains with the corporation and not with the individual person. Corporate responsibility then is related to the purpose of the organization as established by law, and where the corporation is a business, the responsibility is to conduct business in compliance with the law. Internally, the board of directors usually bears substantial responsibility for all the corporation's acts or omissions (May, Cheney & Roper, 2007). This study in this regard will prepare a corporate social responsibility policy for British Airways. CSR policy creation is the responsibility of top management, and is usually created and approved by chief executive officer of the company. Thus, assuming the role of CEO I will write the CSR policy of British Airways.

The importance of Corporate Social Responsibility

The terms of the title suggest that CSR is a 'bolt' on to corporate goals and mission another aspect of the aims set out by an organization to achieve. However there are two ways to look at the position of CSR in the context of wider objectives. Either it is a fundamental driver in an ethically engaged organization which drives the setting of other objectives where its influence prompts and shapes them, or, and at the other end of the spectrum, CSR is just one of a range of objectives, a discreet focus (Timpere, 2008). In theory all corporate objectives should have a common outcome that is to work towards the mission statement of a business.

The value that controls the CSR policy of British Airways (BA) is to maintain good relationship with their customers. Taken at face value, when a company establishes a CSR policy, it is simply making a social contract with its stakeholders, however they are defined. Typically, a CSR policy will restate the company's commitment to abide by accepted corporate governance practices, ethical standards, and the laws governing the places where it operates. It may include statements on community involvement, and investment and intentions regarding corporate philanthropy and employee volunteering.
