Contrast & Comparison on Gay/Lesbian Marriage in the United States

Introduction

Same-s ex marriages is also known as gay marriages. This marriage took place between the two individuals who are having same sex or same gender. The supporters of same-sex marriage consider this marriage as an equal marriage. Many countries after 2000 are accepting the same sex marriages legally and allowing them to get married. Same -sex marriages get different rights and benefits according to their states and government laws. The same- sex marriage is consisting of many debated regarding religious, social, economical and from various other points of views. These are still not clear because every person has a different opinion regarding same sex marriage (Badgett).

Same-sex marriages are also performed in like civil ceremony and even in the religious sittings in some religions. Same-sex marriage performs in religious sittings only when their religion accepts this marriage and has no such against opinions regarding same-sex marriages. The reason behind accepting the same-sex marriage varies from person to person as every person has their own opinion and right to agree with it or not (Badgett).

Acceptance of Same-Sex Marriages

Same sex marriages are accepted in almost all the jurisdictions of US. In 1996 the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) took an action against the same-sex marriages. In this act no state of US was allowed to accept same sex marriages which are performed in their state or in other states. In 2004 six states have accepted same-sex marriages legally. Those states which accepted same-sex marriages are Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Vermont, lowa, District of Columbia and Native American tribal jurisdictions (Sullivan, pp. 416).

In US there are two states that recognize same-sex marriages done in other states. One is California, in 2008 California allowed same sex marriages but on certain conditions. Washington and Maryland also accepted the same sex marriages in year 2012. There are also some other states who are willing to accept the same-sex marriages (Sullivan, pp. 416).

Legalization of same sex marriages are done through courts and legislatives and not by giving votes. It also depends from state to state, nine states did not accepted the same sex marriages in the Statute and thirty states did not accepted the same sex marriages in their constitute. In 1970's the movement was ran in the United Sates to get the rights and benefits of the same-sex marriages. In 1993 the movement became more obvious in the politics of United States. At that time Hawaii Supreme Court affirmed that states are not authorized to prohibit the same-sex marriages. In the 21st century the acceptance for same sex marriages are increasing rapidly from public. It was seen in the national polls that public are in favor of same-sex marriages. When Barrack Obama became the president he publicly confirmed the support for making same-sex marriages legalized (Sullivan, pp. 416).
