Primary Results and Research Methodology

3.1 Introduction

This chapter will provide the research method used for conducting this research study. Methodology is a significant element of any research study. Saunders et al (2007) explains that the methodology of the study is an organized technique in which the data or information is gathered so that the research question can be answered or the research hypothesis can be proved. To put it simply, the methodology of the research study is a sketch or a map which helps the researcher to conduct the study in an organized and proper flow and to gather information which can help the researcher to answer the research objectives (Beetz, 2007, pp. 19-42) (Abdul-Rahman, 1995).

Method statements are written descriptions of how the work will be carried out. They usually deal with the use of labor and plant in terms of types, gang sizes and expected outputs (Brook, 2004). The research accession used is qualitative and used the case study methodology. Qualitative research is practically more immanent than quantitative one.

As stated by Adam (2003), researchers can collect data using the qualitative data method only, quantitative data method only or the combination of both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Creswell explains that qualitative data is used to establish and understand the rational or theory of relationship in the research topic revealed in the qualitative data collection. This data collection method can also be used to suggest theory which can then be used to support and strength the quantitative analysis. Creswell also stated that quantitative data could point out relationships which may not be salient to the researcher (Abdelsalam, 2009).

Many researchers have stressed that the combination of both qualitative and quantitative data methods provides better richer validation of result and better basis for contextual interpretation and they also stress the advantages of combining both methods to be as follows: Easy to have a clearer and bigger picture surrounding an issue, Results achieved can be strength by cross-validation, and Explanation can be given to reason why results can be different (Feng, 2005). Due to the advantages stated, the qualitative and quantitative data were collected in this research (Abdelsalam, 2009).

3.2 Data Collection Procedure

3.2.1 The First Stage of Collecting the Data

The first stage data collection for this study were gathered from many registered construction companies in Dubai. These data represent the bidding stage for the complished construction projects were bidded before 2009 as per their total prices and item wise breakdown.

3.2.2 The Second Stage of Collecting the Data

The second stage data coolection for this study were gathered from many registered ...
