Personality should be a key component of career planning. Everyone has a specific personality style that allows them to perform well at certain things and not as well at others. That style tends to influence their likes and dislikes, interests and pursuits. One of the most important aspects of the career planning process is to make sure that the career path a person chooses is something that suits the individual's personality style. Failure to do so can lead to a lifetime of displeasure in the wrong career. (Harris, 2002)

Match Career with Personality Can Impact People

A common method the people use to select a career path is to choose something that sounds good or that someone else has suggested. Often, the person who will be working in the chosen profession has no idea what people in that field actually do all day. Then, after getting a degree and pursuing the desired path, they find out that they don't like what they do. But, it can be difficult to change to a different profession after spending all that time and money to be trained for a specific career. Thus, many people spend a lifetime in a career they don't enjoy. (Harris, 2002)

Matching career choice with personality style should be done during the career exploration process. When done properly, people learn about their personality type; then evaluate a variety careers and eliminate the ones that aren't a good fit.

The Four Basic Personality Types

These personality types have both positive and negative features, and each has benefits and disadvantages when it comes to careers. Additionally, most people don't fit neatly into any one category, but instead have a dominant style and a back-up or secondary style.

Many career counselors utilize number of careers tests to help students understand their personality types. Often, these tools will identify several careers or professions that would be suitable for the individual based on the personality profile. While such results can be very helpful, they shouldn't be used exclusively in selecting an appropriate career path. The person's interests, lifestyle desires and financial goals should also be taken into consideration. The personality aspect is just one component of the overall career planning process.
