Abstract

The importance of the Applied Science and Technology as a subject cannot be denied. There are a wide range of career opportunities for individuals perusing their degrees in the respective subject. One of the most innovative sub disciplines of AS&T is the computer security. The report aims to discuss and describe the necessary education required; credentials involved; training provided to the students; the typical duties; starting and potential salaries and other benefits; and most importantly the future employment and advancement in the discipline.

Introduction

Applied Science and Technology is not just an educational discipline. In fact, its uses and applications stretch into various other practical fields and areas. Hence, the importance of the Applied Science and Technology as a subject cannot be denied. Moreover, this is perhaps the reason why there are a wide range of career opportunities for individuals perusing their degrees in the Applied Sciences and Technology (AS&T). These include jobs in Health Care; Clerical jobs if the applied science degree focused on accounting; jobs and careers associated with fisheries, pharmacy, veterinary, diesel mechanics, automobile repair technology and so forth. However, the most commonly preferred job opportunities in the field of AS&T are the ones associated with the computer or network technology.

Discussion

Bachelor of Science (BSAST) in the Applied Science and Technology degree program helps the mid-career adults belonging to a wide range of the applied fields to meet effectively all their professional and educational needs whilst completing the baccalaureate degree. In cases when more than sixty credits are transferred to the program provided that those credits are recorded to be more than ten years old at time of application, the students will be asked to display the currency of the knowledge they posses (Trauth, 2002).Generally, AS&T is basically a Ph.D. program. However, the students that are interested in further pursuing the degree of Master's in Science can complete this additional requirement whilst continuing toward the Ph.D program in AS&T. Majority of the computer information systems careers and jobs require a 4-year degree.

The training programs at different educational institutions are designed to offer the students with the practical and technical assistance necessary to work in the field as technicians, who in turn provide competent and effective services in the respective fields they choose. Many of the entry-level jobs need training program of the duration of a year or less. The AS&T usually maintains various certificate programs to offer this type of necessary entry-level training. The students receive certificates for completing these programs. These Certificate programs are usually for the students who can manage spending 3 to 6 hours per day and 5 days a week. These programs are usually longer than one term / semester however less than 2 years. Each program stresses on the practical learning and application (Papastergiou, 2008).
