An Hour with Larry Ellison

Larry Ellison is the person who is leading Oracle Corporation. Larry is the CEO & Co-founder of the company. Larry led the Oracle sailing team in America's cup competition. In the program 52 minutes, Larry took a chance to express his opinion to the leadership & business. He is the third richest man in the USA. Charlie Rose questioned about the Larry's remarkable achievements. In response to the queries, Larry presented his view points about success. The most notable thing in his expression was the “will” to compete. The co-founder liked to win, like another person in this world. However, every individual has his own philosophy of winning. I liked Larry's philosophy of “winning”. He adopts a distinct stance of being into a competition. To him, the philosophy of winning lies into a successful competition. Competition is about putting oneself to a test. It is about assessing our very own capabilities. I agree to the formula he presented for being successful. It revolves around two simple ideals: desire & work hard. The two elements are essential for winning a competition.

I strongly disagree with Larry's view point of attitude towards change. He believes that people do not like change. To me, this is not the case. Today, people welcome change & innovation to a great extent. Larry's explanation, over the Swedish incident, suggested that sometimes competition becomes an obsession for him. In his efforts to make sailing as an extreme sport, he does not focus the essential aspects of security. In order to increase popularity, it is not essential to make it excessively risky. A sport is a source of entertainment, fun, and winning. The severity of the competition should not have the nature of “combat exercise”.

Khan Academy & the Innovator

Khan Academy has gained attention in the academic world. The idea developed from a mere experience of sharing academic lessons between a tutor and student. A digital blackboard presents the images & drawings along with a voice over of the tutor. Khan records his lessons & uploads them to an online repository. From there, millions of students access those lessons. Khan does not like adding his visuals to the lessons. He believes it would distract students' concentration. He solves most of the problems in real time, which makes his lessons a bit messy.

Dorsey is another business leader, who revolutionized the way we communicate. The new idea Square is likely to change people shop. I strongly disagree to the view that innovation does not come from established institutions. I believe innovation has no boundaries.
