Introduction

Benjamin Franklin was an extraordinarily gifted and intelligent person. Franklin wrote his autobiography and considered to be a grandfather of self-improvement. Since, his life changes because of his self-improvement and transform him from uneducated child to a wealthy intelligent man. He was a political philosopher, writer, printer, diplomatic and scientist. The first part of his autobiography is about his family. Later on, he described his accomplishments, struggles and experiences. He shared his experience in the anticipation that his son and other people can learn, the importance of self-improvement in one's life and how it brings constructive change life. He strived for self-improvement when he was in his teens; for instance, improve his writing skills. Moreover, he also identified thirteen virtues of self-improvement.

Discussion

The most prominent theme in the life of Benjamin Franklin is self-improvement. Franklin belonged to a poor family, who were soap and candle makers, and was heavily populated and had seventeen children. Therefore, he was not able to continue his education after two years of formal education. Still, his self-improvement made him the respected intellects of the Western world by 18th Century.

He was a self made man, and a role model for the rage to riches. Throughout his life, he believed in self-improvement. Until his death at the age of 84, he persistently endeavors to improve his behavior, body and mind. He emphasize on 13 virtues of self-improvement that includes Chastity, Cleanliness, Frugality, Industry, Humility, Justice, Moderation, Order, Resolution, Silence, Sincerity, Temperance, and Tranquility.

Self-education - Mind

During his training at a printing shop of his brother James, Franklin tried harder to improve his skills of writing. He employed several methods to become a better writer. He studied the authors' scripting which he liked and is practiced writing in similar writing style. He also tried to rephrase articles of well-known writers, looking to improve writing skills. He would also rewrite essays by famous writers, seeking to improve them. Another technique he planned was writing the sentences and paragraphs of an article on shuffling the slips, paper's slips, and lastly trying to mend them in the appropriate manner.

Similarly, Franklin was able to read a number of books during apprenticeship, as he tried to read everything get on hands. He not only read but also liked to discuss whatever he read. In 1727, he formed the Junto, as he wanted to have an equipped forum where to discuss and explore intellectual subject matters. Junto members made every effort to improve their world and minds. The members help each other in finding ways to assist in business and community.

Franklin's apparently never-ending inquisitiveness assisted him in keeping up an enduring spirit of learning; for this he sustained his scientific investigations, he convened with scientists and scholars in every countryside he tripped, he kept in touch with a number of the brilliant intellectuals of the 18th century, and he also tried to learn French.
