Basic Life Support Course For Nurses In Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Introduction
Learning is a process of gaining knowledge and polishing your skills. There are a number of educational theories designed in order to make the educational process effective and interesting. Educating a child is easier than educating an adult. Adults are goal and relevancy oriented. Their experiences in life make them stiffer toward the acceptance of new theories and facts. Therefore, it is necessary to design an exceptional learning structure for them.
Learning theory
There are a number of learning theories designed to make the teaching process effective and acceptable for the learners. The learning theories do not only help the learners, but they also help the teachers. Their implementation reshapes the teacher's teaching style in a way that is more enthralling and acceptable by the learners.
Adult learning
Learning, as described by the American educational theorist, David A. Kolb, is something you gain through transformation of experiences in life. Adults have spent a greater time span, experiencing whatever life brought to them. This exposure makes them self directed and practical. They demand respect, and they are looking forward to a pragmatic approach. They want reasons for learning and they are more concerned about how this learning would be advantageous for them.
Andragogy
According to Malcolm Knowles, adulthood is the phase of life in which people start behaving maturely (Lee Dunn, 2002). In order to make learning effective for these ripened individuals, a specific learning theory is present called Andragogy. This theory explains different characteristics of an adult and how learning can be made an effective process for them.
The concept of Andragogy is very old. However, the term became popular because of a famous scholar, Malcolm Knowles, in between 1970's and 1980's. Knowles considered that adult are different as compared to children. Acclimation of an adult to the learning environment is very important. Interactive sessions should be encouraged the process should be facilitating to both, the active and the passive learners.
Knowles five assumptions
Knowle's believed in a different set of assumptions for adults as compared to the assumptions set for the children (Thompson, Margaret, Michael, 2004). He incorporated his entire knowledge about the adult behaviour and psychology to design these postulates which are the basis of andragogy. The five presumptions, as stated by Knowles are that adults are self-directed learners, adults are experienced individuals adults are goal oriented which means that they want to learn, adults are problem-centered, and adults can be best motivated by internal factors (Blondy, 2007).
The Population
Nurses
The population selected for this topic is a key element of the healthcare system. The nursing is a noble and a highly dependable profession. The nurses are responsible to provide affectionate care to the ailing patients. They are responsible to evaluate the patient response towards the medication and treatment (Thresyamma, 2003).
