Introduction

A Language is the median for communication and symbol of identity. If Black English is not a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is? Written by James Baldwin and Little Miracles, Kept Promises written by Sandra Cisneros are motivational writings in English literature. Both the writings focus on the language and literature. The writing of James Baldwin “If Black English is not a Language, Then Tell Me, What is?” is directly critique in the white American English literature. Baldwin argues that Black Language is a significant part of American Literature History. He focuses on the role of language. His consideration was not on language but the acceptance of Black Language. “Language is also a political instrument, means and proof of the power. It is the most vivid and crucial key to identity.” This quote of Baldwin becomes valid and emphasizes on the importance and acceptance of Black English. Being, Black American, he feels to be discriminated in literature.

Baldwin addresses the impact of Black English on White American. He calls attention to the importance of Black English as the identity of Black American. He critically argues that, if this unparalleled passage of Black English does not designate that Black English is a language, then the definition of “Language” should be revised. He critique on White American that they show that Black American were not presented in history, and hence, African American has nothing to do with English literature or English language. His writing showed his interest in English Literature and his need for acceptance of Black English in English Literature. Interconnecting Writing of Sandra Cisneros “Little Miracles, Kept Promises” reflects the same issue as Baldwin had. Her writings stand for Mexican-American and their part in English Literature. As she was part of Mexican-American community so, she wants to represent her as Mexican-American. She is a renowned poet and story writer.

She raised the point of Mexican-Americans under representation in English Literature. In this story, she tells that some twenty-three notes left at a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe at a catholic church in a Mexican-American community in Texas. Each note is a petition or request for divine favor. With its compassionate, humor, and poetic, she reflects Mexican American culture (Cisneros, p.50-150).
