Introduction

In this poem Adrienne rich brought out the feeling that women desire of a free live and the strength they need. Aunt Jennifer has opened free roaming desires in the bright green forest. Aunt Jennifer on the other hand is nervous and weak. According to her she is even not capable enough to put the ivory needle that she requires to make embroidery. She has a wedding ring around her finger that reminds her about the responsibilities and duties that she has as a wife. This sense f responsibility has taken her freedom to live life according to her. Even when she dies, the wedding ring will still continue to show the burdened life that she had. But this is not the same for the tigers as they continue to roam freely and fearlessly around the forest. (Pope, 1984 pp 123)

Discussion

The poem Aunt Jennifer's tigers show a woman who is trapped inside the cultural constraints and responsibilities of married life. This poem has assumptions and implications that show it as an expression of the evils related to the leadership and authority related to males. In the first stanza of the poem Aunt Jennifer shows the situation in which she is by contrasting this world in his artistic creation. The embroidery which she has knitted in tigers shows the world she desire. The life which is fearless, noble and powerful just like the tigers. This is expressed in the line 'They pace in sleek chivalric certainty'. Aunt Jennifer is a very nervous and fearful female in her house. She lacks from freedom and authority unlike the tigers that are portrayed in the poem which reflects the behavior of males in the society.
