Argument Essay: Gun Control

Introduction

Gun control refers to the laws which are created to impose legal measures for restricting the general public from ownership or holding the license of weapons/firearms. Under these laws, the government agencies try to figure out that who is capable of carrying a firearm. In my opinion, there is no use of developing gun control laws, as the criminals will still find a way out to carry their weapons, if they wish so. This essay argues that gun control laws cannot really control crime.

Discussion

Nearly 44 states of America allowed their citizens to carry weapons outside of their homes in 1980, solely for the purpose of self defense. However, in 1994, the gun control laws were imposed on the citizens; under these laws it was restricted to possess, manufacture or transfer the guns, without having a legal permit from the government agency. In 2005, the “Stand your ground” laws were passed which allowed the citizens to carry their weapons to a certain limited extent.

The gun control laws cannot stop the crimes; the criminals always get the guns and other weapons through their influential links (Kallini, 2010). The government and law making agencies should consider the fact that whenever the criminals will need any weapon, they will have access to it, even if the gun control law is strictly practiced in that place.

The gun control laws and policies will never be able to make the society completely free of the guns. Also, the guns cannot become safer to use through the implementation of gun control laws. In fact, the general public is in extreme need of guns, in order to save themselves, their families, and properties from the danger and harm which the criminals offer to them. Thus, by implementing gun control policies, the governments actually takes access from the public of something which could otherwise play a key role for providing them security (Jacobs, 2002). The guns can play an effective role, to keep the criminals away from their evil activities. An argument is often made that the people can learn to defend themselves, their families and properties even in the absence of guns; though this is true to some extent but the fact is that not everyone has time and access to the self defense training, in today's busy world. Therefore, the gun control policy may become more detrimental to society, as people would be forced to take self defense trainings, which is not quite natural for them, and most often does not shift in their tough schedules.

Again, it is important to note that the ultimate goal of gun control policy, which is to make the society safer, is not achieved by executing these policies. It is the people who kill one another, not the weapon. Therefore, it can be said surely that if criminals want to kill someone, they will do so using some illegal gun or weapon, even if the gun control policy is ...
