Introduction

Angiography is a medical term or method that has gained a lot of popularity in recent time. When the arteries of the heart gets blocked, the flow of blood through them eventually declines and this way the heart will starve the vital oxygen and then lead to a heart stroke or death in a severe case. If the heart disease is detected earlier, it can save the life of an individual.

Angiography is a specific test which examines whether the arteries in an individual's heart are blocked or functioning properly. Arteries are the vital veins that convey oxygenated blood from the heart to the different parts of the figure. The angiography process involves an examination through the x-ray and a fluorescent dye. First the chest x-rays are taken to examine the arteries in our heart. However, the soft tissues or arteries inside are not seen very clearly in an x-ray so a fluorescent dye is done. It is fluorescence sodium which is a highly fluorescent chemical compound that soaks up the blue light with fluorescence. It is normally called as fluorescein. When the dye enters the blood vessels, the x-ray captures the image details called fluoroscopy. If there is any blockage in the heart or arteries then the dye will not reach inside and the doctor will eventually have an idea that there is some blockage in the arteries.

History of Angiography

The angiographic technique was initially developed in 1927 by a physician and neurologist who belonged to Portuguese, named Egas Moniz. His purpose of coming up with this technique was to give contrasted x-rays angiography which assists in detecting various heart or nervous diseases. These diseases can be arteries blockage, tumour, and arteries malformation. Egas Moniz is considered as the pioneer in his ground. He performed the very first cerebral angiogram in the year 1927 in Lisbon. The inserting of the radio opaque material was let out to the world in the year 1953. This technique was named after Dr. Sven- Ivar Seldinger that is why it is also called as Seldinger technique. Dr. Sven- Ivar Seldinger was a Swedish radiologist and introduced this process in the year 1953 (www.humantouchofchemistry.com).
