The article “Patients' decision about whether or not to take the antihypertensive drugs: qualitative study” is critically analysed. Appraisal tool used is Critical Appraisal Skill Program. After deeply studying and assessing, this article is found to be very essential for future researches. The study designs and methodology used is appropriate, and according to up to date standards. Confidentiality of study subjects is well restored. All the rules of conducting qualitative research are followed. Overall study is good but further interrogation is needed to make the results more defined.
Introduction
Qualitative data comprise of experiences and words, not numerical data. In order to analyse a data, creativity, deep understanding and thorough study are required. (Powell and Renner, 2003 p.1) Qualitative research is essentially a collection of various approaches that have similarities as well as differences. (Parahoo, 2006) Qualitative research documents not consider the truth as objective, but as a subjective reality that is personally experienced at different levels by each individual (Vishnevsky and Beanlands, 2004). Hypertension is a main health problem all over the world. Despite national and international guidelines and steps taken to minimize the risk of hypertension, population based studies have found that almost two third of people with hypertension are either untreated or inappropriately controlled, including a great number who remain undiagnosed. Among those with proper diagnosis of hypertension, the World Health Organization has stated that the low adherence to treatment is a vital factor impeding good control (WHO, 2010). The reasons for poor adherence are typical and include complex drug regimens, the increased cost of drug, older age, poor economical condition, cognitive problems, and mental disorders (Home, 2005).
The people who are not properly informed about the importance of adherence and were of no use. A better understanding of patients' views, through qualitative research, is therefore essential to educate the population about the low rates of treatment, adherence, and control and to bring into notice the development of evidence based interventions to modify management. It is also a very significant postulate to think over that physicians' failure to recognize the people education about the causes and risk of disease is one of the key hurdle to the success of public health programmes. According to this study, physicians are also one of the motivating factor for patients, so the chances of stroke an eventually the heart attack cause by the hypertension could be much less. As in this busy era of life people have a highly busy life style. Their eating and sleeping habits, fast professional life, having easily available tasty junk food, stress, depression, other mental disorders, lack of peace of mind all of these are few contributing factors which are responsible for the poor health of the population. I critically analyze an article on Patients' decisions about whether or not to take antihypertensive drugs, qualitative study.
