Introduction

Whistle-Blowing Nurses

Whistle blower is the name given to a person who reports the wrongdoings within an organization in the hope that it will end. When it comes to health care, there are many whistle-blowing nurses who exist within an organization. But incidents recently have become very serious. This year in the October issue of Clinical Nursing journal, a study has shown that nurses who are facing these issues can suffer from a long-term impact on their emotional well-being. The employees and other colleagues have a responsibility towards these whistle-blowing nurses and should provide them with the support they need (Clinical Nursing, 2012).

Research

A thorough research was done in Australia which was conducted by taking in-depth interviews of the nurses who were either reported by whistle-blowers or where one of them. The behaviors of the nurses were very shocking and it included nightmares, overwhelming distress, alcohol problems and paranoid behavior at work. The sample collected for this research were all female nurses at both ends of the study and they all had about two to forty years of experience in this field.

This research was carried out by people who were very well experienced in the field of whistle-blowers because they had conducted more such types of researches before as well. They knew about the reasons, the relationships with the other colleagues and the changes that these relationships go through because of the impact of whistle-blowing.

The researchers said that they were aware of the negative effects that whistle-blowing has on a person's life and how they can all deal with it. They also knew that these effects were long lasting and had a huge on the emotional and the mental well being of the whistle-blowing nurse (Kath, 2012).

Other authors of this study stated that those nurses who agree to undertake this position of a whistle blower. The authors who concluded the resulted concluded that the whistle-blowing nurses will face long-term physical, personal, emotional and professional life. It was also noted that it was because of the role of the whistle-blowing nurses that improvements were seen in the in health care industry in terms of safety and quality.

The whistle-blower nurses who reported for the research described that they usually avoided all sorts of social occasions because they now faced a loss of confidence. One nurse reported that she went into severe depression and started drinking and sleeping at odd times because of this. Another nurse reported that she was looking for ways to deal with the problem.
