Ottobah Cugoano was born in 1957, in Africa. As a child, he was kidnapped by slave traders and spent up to 18 years as a slave. In 1772 he was taken to England and set free. He taught to read and write in 1787. With the help of his friend, Olauda Equiano, he was able to publish an account to his experiences, Narrative of the Enslavement of a Native Africa.
