Abortion

Introduction

Abortion has been defined as a medical process employed or use for the purpose of ending a pregnancy in order to avoid birth of a baby. It has also been referred to as termination or termination of pregnancy in the field of medicine and in the language of medical practitioners. The possibility of successful termination or ending of pregnancy depends upon the number of weeks a woman have been pregnant for or the number of days that have passed from the day the woman conceived. The normal procedure of ending pregnancy is done either with the help of medications in a particular manner or through a surgical procedure. Some people get confused between miscarriage and abortion but it worth mentioning that there is a big different between the two events. Miscarriage occurs naturally without using any medical procedure or treatment and is unplanned while abortion on the other hand is done with the help of planned medical intervention and treatment.

Discussion

There are different types of medical interventions available for abortion depending upon the number of weeks of pregnancy. The number of weeks are usually calculated from the first day of the patient's last period. In case of early medical abortions when the pregnancy is nine weeks old the recommended procedure is that of taking two different medicines at an interval of 48 hours in between. The affect of these medicines is similar to that of natural miscarriage occurring at early stages of pregnancy. The second medical intervention that is recommended between 7 to 15 weeks of pregnancy is that of Vacuum aspiration or suction termination in which doctors use a gentle suction technique for the removal of foetus from the womb of mother. This procedure is considerably quick and only take 10 to 15 minute. Another medical procedure for termination of pregnancy is surgical dilation or evacuation which is carried out at later stages of pregnancy like after 15 weeks. In this procedure the cervix of the mother is dilated and stretched gently with the help of forceps and suction tube is inserted to remove the foetus (NHS).

There are multiple reasons behind conduction or undertaking an abortion that may be personal preference, a pregnancy might prove to be fatal and risky for the health of the mother or a high risk and chance that the born child will have some type of abnormality or medical condition that it will not be able to survive or is unfavorable (NHS).

Different countries have different laws with regards to abortion some completely prohibit it while others allow it under limited condition and circumstances. For instance in UK the abortion can only be undertaken within the first 24 weeks of the pregnancy under conditions such as that the abortion has to be carried out in a licensed legal clinic or proper hospital, at least two of the doctors have to agree on the point that the abortion is safe for the woman's physical and mental health and will cause comparatively ...
