Abortion

Introduction

There are approximately 1,600,000 abortions per year in the U.S. The two absolute theologies of pro-life and prochoice are in direct clash with each other. The morality of having an abortion can be better contemplated in the context of definitions of human, and brain death standards. The animal rights can be associated to the act of abortion to analyze the rights of unborn human.

Discussion

What is abortion?

Abortion is referred to an act of terminating pregnancy before the period of extra uterine viability. This is an act in which the life of an embryo (a zygote or fertilized egg) or fetus (after three months of fertilization) is terminated. It is primarily of two major types: induced abortions (a human intervention to terminate the pregnancy deliberately) or spontaneous abortions or miscarriages, (the embryo or fetus is expelled out of the body spontaneously) (Pederson, et. al, 2003, pp 3).

Old traditional pro-life argument on abortion

Pro life means the people who advocates the child's life in the womb, with the believe that aborting the fetus is in parallels of murdering an unborn human being as life starts from the point of conception. Although, the old pro-life argument does not always encompass the religious motives, but it is the most common old argument. Christianity preaches human beings not to kill others. Therefore, the conservatives support their argument with God's teachings and claim that abortion is a murder of a human being and the practice shall be strictly outlawed (Sharpe, 2010, pp 2).

Limitations of this argument

The involvement of God's words and principles by the pro-life advocators to support their argument is beneficial for their propagation of their theology. With the advent of science and technology determines that life doesn't begin at the moment of conception; thus, it is not a murder of a human life. The pro-life groups are also criticized for the accusation of not granting rights to women and the situations should be considered.

New traditional pro-life argument

In the earlier times, women used to abort their fetus by traditionally old ways at home. But with the advent of modern science and technology, this is conveniently done by birth control pills, contraception pills or Plan B. Most of the supporters of pro-life strictly condemns the use of birth control pills and demand it to be outlawed. They substantiate their argument by proposing that the utilization of these pills and procedures prevents the birth of a child, which is equivalent to murder of the child and such abortive pills are considered as weapons for murder (http://www.prolifeinfo.org/). The conservative supporters of pro-life condemns legalizing abortion on the basis that promoting and legalizing such acts results in eradication of family values and promote sexual promiscuity before marriage (Sharpe, 2010, pp. 2).

Limitations of this argument

The staunch supporters fail to recognize the scientific and medical need for abortion at times when abortion could be the in the best interests of child and mother. These conditions may include the incidence ...
