Abstract

The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States played an important role shaping the history and borders of many countries. The role of United States cannot be denied as it helped many nations from the conservative ideology and expansionist policy of the Soviet Union. The tension between the two countries continued for a very long time period but the struggle was worth it. This paper aims to summarize the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union and then compare it with the relationship of United States with another country. Additionally, it will compare and analyze the difference between the dealing of United States in the past and how it has changed its ways in the current situation.

Cold War

The development of tense circumstances and situation between the United States and Soviet Union is termed as Cold War. No military action or fighting was undertaken by either side. One country distrusts the other in terms of beliefs and actions. The main cause of tension between the two countries was the Expansionist policy of the Soviet Union. Many other western countries also feared Soviet Union for its communism. On the other hand the Soviet Union was fearful of western attack or invasion. It distrusted the United States for its nuclear weapons and attack. The United States helped countries like Turkey and Greece under Truman Doctrine and helped in the growth of European Union to fight the adverse affects of the Soviet Union's communism. Both the countries had different ideologies as the Soviet Union believed that undertaking expansion will result in better future for every country while the United States believed in the theory of capitalism.

The United States truly believed in the Domino theory affect and feared that if one state became communist then the surrounding states will be forced to undertake communism. This fear gave rise to the theory of containment which suggested that the Soviet Union must not be allowed to expand or grow to halt the Domino effect and communism. United States took further steps at Yalta Conference where both the counties disagreed over how Germany division would take place. Other western allies also did not agree with the ideology of the Soviet Union which was obvious from the speech of Winston Churchill.
