Introduction

Patient care and the desire to save lives and make a difference, to me, are the core reasons of existence of nursing as a profession. While most of the professions aim at making money and fortune, it is this nobility of nursing that makes human sensitive and concerned about their fellow men. The care of humanity and the desire to promote the welfare of human beings at large are the noblest of reasons why nurses opt to perform this role in particular. Providing timely medical assistance as well as caring while healing is an essential feature of the profession, without which, patient would never be able to recover. Hence, nurses are blessed with the feeling of elevation that they are directly contributing towards the health of a patient (Gibelman & Schervish, 1997, pp: 27).

Their range of services revolves around patients who are ill, injured or having some physical disability. They provide counseling services for patients and aid in evaluating their recovery from illnesses and disease (The National Council on the Aging, 1999, pp: 16).

The management and teaching with regard to the field of nursing is quite a complex task since technologies and advancements have led to major transformations in the fields of adult nursing. Care management is characterized by the three general features of encouraging routine visits to health care providers, improving the adherence of physicians (and fellow health care providers) to established guidelines for the provision of care, and advancing the ability of individual patients to navigate the current health care system. Nurses are crucial to the successful implementation of care management for older adults living with one symptoms of disease or the other, particularly because nurses and nursing care support the concept of addressing physical, psychological, and social needs of individuals on an ongoing basis while providing for self-care, and efficient use of available resources, and individuals' quality of life. Because nurses may be the point of contact for older adults in the community, acute or critical care environment, long-term care facility, or sub-acute setting, nurses provide much-needed care, encouragement, and guidance for this vulnerable population of individuals.

Older adults with chronic depression are at risk for self-inflicted, life-threatening injuries, especially given the physical and psychological complications of depression and other such diseases. Suicide prevention is imperative and must be recognized by nurses as a priority in the nursing care management of older adults in this vulnerable population. These age groups are prone to taking extreme actions in case of misery since they lose hope easily. This is one of the other domains of nursing that requires her to be careful about how these adults perceive disease and respond to it.
