Comparison between Manila and NY (transportation)

Introduction

The transportation systems in megacities are of considerable importance in developed countries. Transportation system of megacities like New York and Manila has developed well enough for a city of this size - the cars, buses, trucks, all known yellow taxis. Every form of public transport is designed to provide easy movement around the city its residents and visitors. Each of the above vehicles has a number of features with which it is desirable to take a look in advance, even before you use one of them. Cities have become major players in the economy, and collect more than half of the world population and the functioning of urban transport network have a direct impact on the lives of their inhabitants and their economic activity (Mohring, 2002).

New York subway is one of the oldest and largest subways in the world. Metro provides a link between four of the five boroughs of New York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Fifth District - Staten Island - has its own line. The system itself is different from the subway in Manila. The main difference is that the system has no-one correspondence and the train station. If in Manila at any station you always know perfectly well where the train will take you even if you sit on it blindly, then in New York, this approach does not work.

Whereas the public transportation in Manila; is a complement to the vast and chaotic existing private transport supply in the city. It is administered by Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), EDSA corner Orense Street and, Guadalupe Makati. The Mass Rail Transit (MRT) or Metrorail is an elevated commuter rail system with four lines in operation and several more under construction.

Discussion

Public transportation (also known as transit or mass transit) is a transportation system designed to move large numbers of people to common destinations. It is critically important to metropolitan economies and environments. Public transportation comes in many forms, with many local eccentricities. Modes include Para-transit, buses, streetcars and trams, heavy rail and metros, and commuter rails. Analysis of transportation tends to focus on commuting and choice of mode, although there is also substantial interest in other personal transportation choices, such as time of day for travel and grouping of trips (Mohring, 2002). Each mode has similarities and differences in the issues to be analyzed. For virtually all transportation systems, there is a large, typically publicly owned, infrastructure and a variable, often privately owned, set of vehicles that use that infrastructure. The financing systems are often complex, and the incentives that they offer may generate further issues that need to be addressed in evaluating transportation systems (Meyer, 2005).

In this paper, we have analyzed and compared the transportation system of the Asian megacity (Manila) with the American megacity (New York), very important and interesting facts come up while comparing the data set for the given cities. The data set for the two cities covers numbers of ...
