This Essay is a collection of a historical perspective written by a famous sociological scholar “Herbert J Gans”, in this essay the writer aims to provide an overview of the way ordinary people or poor people are living their lives (Skolnick, 2006), (Gans, 1988).
Poverty is the most common element affecting the growth of the country, it can by described in conditions that become the basis of its arising, on the other hand if the disease of the poverty holds its foot in the country it could also be defined based on its after effects.
The causes and effects of the poverty entirely depends on individual scenario, on the other hand its effect could be negative, positive, destructive and adaptive. In addition to these, the most common negative effect of poverty is that it destroy the general needs of the poor people, for instance it drove poor people to street crime, drugs and other illegal activities (Gans, 1988).
It has been generally observed that most of the American people believes that the lives of poor people is much more complicated then it is visible, whereas several other normal people argues the behavior of poor people is because of the existing perception that is prevailing in their minds (Skolnick, 2006).
The writer views is different from others scholar, as according to him the behavior of poor people is entirely dependent on their specific conditions and due to their traditional history with poverty. The author further evaluates that as normal and well to do people raise certain objection to the behavior of the people, which is certainly unethical and inappropriate (Gans, 1988).
For the better understatement of the condition of poor people, the author has provided an effective example, for instance if a young man belonging to poor cast is unemployed may be due to poor job market, young women is refusing to marry a man because of its unemployment issue and others. The major issue is whatever the reason of above expressed example the blame initially goes to poor man and women by describing them as ineffective for the community (Gans, 1988).
In addition to these all-poor, people are not judged based on reality rather judged due to prevailing thoughts and past history. More over with the passage of time poor people especially in America are described as beggar, ineffective, and other disrespectable words (Skolnick, 2006).
