CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Most African societies are in worrying times, and as Filomina Steady rightly observes, the "economic domination through corporate globalization is the primary global strategy for economic growth. The resulting development paradigm is re-colonization through the reproduction of hegemonic tendencies that facilitate the movement of trans-national capital (Polanyi, 1966). Commonsense views on differences between men and women tend to assume that there are distinct, consistent and highly significant biological differences between the sexes (Polanyi, 1966).Amy Wharton describes this view in the following way: "The claim that sex marks a distinction between two physically and genetically discrete categories of people is called sexual dimorphism.

Many view sexual dimorphism in humans as a biological fact (Wharton, 2005). The idea of sexual dimorphism has certainly been very influential and continues to be supported by many people. However, as early as the 1960s, writers were beginning to question some of the assumptions on which sexual dimorphism is based and to suggest that the differences between men and women were as much social as biological (Mudimbe, 1988).

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to determine the problem of gender inequality for women in Sub-Saharan African countries.

Problem Statement

Research studies has documented that gender inequalities in Sub-Saharan African countries is high, in fact women are not being given their basic rights.

Rationale of the Study

The problem of gender inequality is on the rise in Sub Saharan African countries, and despite the score of studies carried out in this regard but still no concrete solution has been found. This offers a scope for this research and furnishes rationale for the selection of gender inequality as a subject.

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objective of this study is to:

Examine the situation of gender inequality for women in in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Determine the cause of gender inequality n sub Saharan arfrica

Research Questions

This study in accordance with the nature of the subject will attempt to answer the following questions:

What are the causes of gender inequality in Sub Saharan African countries?

Why women are not provisioned their basic rights in this region?

How the issue of gender equality can be addressed and resolved?

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

Are there different definitions of Inequality?

Inequality is a highly contested topic, which finds different meanings in different contexts. However, there are many misconceptions about inequality as a politic ideology. Inequality and its prevention remain high on a government's agenda, yet its practical implementation still remains questionable. In a definite sense, inequality is an economic or social disparity where some people (on the criterion of gender, colour, or creed) attain preference over their counterparts on the terms of getting their basic human rights, and other amenities and opportunities (Shorvaldur, 2003, p. 558).
