Introduction

Since the very moment a child is born, he is dependent solely on his parents for his needs. Therefore, there are certain obligations and responsibilities of parents towards their children. Food, shelter, clothing, medical care, education and various other aspects related to these infants is to be taken care of by the parents until the day they are grown and independent to support themselves. The basic aim behind all the concern and care is the growth and development of the child both physically and emotionally for ensuring a better future. From an emotional perspective, the most important development is the degree of self-esteem in the child. Many experts have declared the degree of self-esteem as a measure of proper functioning of the child (Brene, 1999).

Self-Esteem is defined as the opinion of an individual about himself. It is the overall judgment of an individual regarding his personality.

Self esteem cannot be developed in an individual until he explores and assess his own self. There are a number of stages of self discovery in an individual. These include,

First Six Years

Though the conscience emerge in a child by six, nature of selfhood tasks and non pressurized teaching in pre schools set the basis of personality building in a child. Besides, attitude towards the same and opposite sex parent also highlights the social behavior the child is most likely to show in future (Briggs, 1988).

Middle Age

It is this particular stage where parents need to create a balance in an individual of socializing with his age mates and at the same time practicing his autonomy.
