ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this research is to identify the factors that lead to increase in the Black youth joining gangs in London. The research initially highlighted the problem Black youth are more likely to engage in joining gangs. The literature focuses on exploring contemporary and traditional perspectives of gangs, providing explanations of the term gang. It further tends to explain the formation of gangs as described by various studies, and the role community plays in their formation. The research conducted survey questionnaire from 50 officers working in law enforcement organisations. These people were asked to fill the survey in order to obtain data related to the degree to which Black people are involved in gangs in London as compared to other ethnic communities and most importantly for highlighting the most significant factors leading Black people, specifically youngsters, to join the gangs in London. According to the survey, lack of parental attention, lack of community related interest, inability of Black culture, lack of cultural understanding, lack of personal identification, language issues, non-supporting attitude towards community members, and Britons' ignorance and racism were the most prominent and influential reasons leading Black youth towards joining gangs in London.
