Introduction

The master piece of F. Scott Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby” is about the American Dream, and the termination of those who tries to believe on the unrealistic objectives. For Gatsby, power and wealth is the most happening factors in life that could lead a man to win everything in the world. Gatsby is the key character of the novel who longs for the past. The life of Gatsby was mostly served in the devotion of recapturing past, but it ultimately dies in the search. In the earlier days, Gatsby had a love relationship with Daisy, knowing that they cannot marry with each other due to huge dissimilarities in their social class. This love story was kept aside on that time and Gatsby leaves her to gain wealth and to make him able to reach her social and economical standards. The story is consisted on different themes such as power, greed, justice, and betrayal. This novel is a great piece of social commentary that provides the peek account of the life in the years of 1920s. The author carefully set the sequence of his novel into different groups, but in the final conclusion, each group found themselves in their own problems by giving a realization of real world.

Discussion Analysis

It has been observed in the novel that Gatsby does not only present the archetypal American dreamer but he also presents the detestation of Fitzgerald for an obsessed society about power and wealth (Pidgeon, p. 1). He is a mysterious man having a deep affection for friends, thus his funeral was attended by his own father, Nick and the “owl-eyed man” (Fitzgerald, p. 30). The interesting scene of the novel takes place when Gatsby says “Of course you can repeat the past” (Fitzgerald, p.70). The American Dream in Gatsby finds more selfish endeavor of pleasure and materialism. This novel indicates that hard work and merit are not enough for being richer. The concept of the American Dream demonstrates to be disappointed and falsehood in the classic novel of Fitzgerald. In this novel, Fitzgerald shows us the flaws of our heroes by using different devices, such as, the enormous house, extravagant parties and the huge library with unread books. The concept about the American Dream that Gatsby represents is something common but it fails to exhibit when the whole scenario was in his hand.
