Sustainable Development: A Climate of Disavowal

Since the time the scientific community settled on the results of combined research which involved the human measures being the reason of the change in our environment, people in general and politicians in particular, have been living in anxiety and fear of whether the humankind would be capable of maintaining the same living standard as they currently do for the future centuries (Sharon, 2006). This discussion or rather argument engraved and exploded the beliefs of environmentalism among several to battle this query and look for solutions for the order of attending to it. Holden (2012), on the subject of looking for solutions to the changing climate, recognizes individuals to have found themselves, espousing to beliefs of either environmentalism or Ecologism (Holden, 2012).

Nevertheless, he makes an addition that, in the political environment, just a single one has been adapted to a major extent. Here, the one that has been referred to is termed as environmentalism or in other words “shallow ecology”. Also he has presented an argument that environmentalism is less friendly to the environment in comparison to its more intense equivalent. Holden illustrates that this is as such for the reason that in actual, the movement of environmentalist is more of a common political rather than an ideological issue for our planet and its biological matter (Holden, 2012).

I am in favor of the argument presented by Holden since I also feel that the ideologies practiced currently under the name of environmentalism have gotten on a wrong path, slowly heading towards its original destination, which is consumerism, in a rather slow pace. I am in favor of Holden's assertion for the reason that I find in my life experience and research that the politicians are conveniently persuaded by the corporations and mutually, they are exploiting this belief of shallow ecology by employing tools such as sustainable development for steering the populace into considering that they are headed towards solving the problem of changing climate, and therefore assisting them in alienating from their beliefs and further evading their disavowal in the way to the change in environment. In this study, I have tried to induce some standpoint into this assertion with the assistance of authors such as Medovoi, Victor, Weintrobe, and Holden.

Sustainable Development: A distortion

Weintrobe (2013), in her book, “Engaging with Climate Change”, illustrates that the disavowal may further and further lead us away from acknowledging the actuality of changing climate. She is of the thought that the more actuality is methodically shunned by means of distortion or by means of making it irrelevant, the more apprehension establishes and accumulates instinctively, and ultimately, the greater is the requirement for defending with additional disavowal (Weintrobe, 2013).
