“Welcome everyone. As you heard, part of my role at Mitsubishi is as the executive responsible for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
I have been involved with CSR of Mitsubishi Company for many years, first as a transaction lawyer working on financing of projects, and now as an Executive at the policy level-- who plays a role in the final decision on tough situations.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the responsibility recognized by the companies for acting in socially responsible manner. There is no single universally accepted definition of corporate social responsibility, it has generally come to mean business decision making linked to ethical values, legal compliance, and respect for people, community, and environment. CSR accepts a company to go further than required by law so as to:
- treat employees fairly and with respect
- operate with integrity and in an ethical manner in all its business dealings with customer, suppliers, lenders, and others
- respect human rights
- sustain the environment for future generations
- be a responsible neighbor in the community and a good 'corporate citizen'.
At Mitsubishi, CSR of Mitsubishi Company is part of our culture. Starting with a policy on basic ethics, in the late 1990s, we created our Code of Business Ethics and Code of Conduct. I am proud that Mitsubishi was the first Crown to introduce a formal Code of Conduct. It received Board approval and applies to all Board members, senior management, and employees.
