Ira Katznelson book, ''Affirmative action then was white.'' discusses the understanding of American history of 20th Century. It has illustrated the era of 1930's and 19040's and their vital plan which got approved as Fair Deal and New Deal. This era was the era of highest discrimination acts.
Discussing the compromise of ethics and pragmatic politics the New Deal was seen as the strong leadership model. These achievements were only possible for the white supremacist elements of FDR's political coalition. Although African-Americans, have right to vote from Roosevelt era, but New Deal Agenda was not in their interest. Most likely, political leadership just demands a level of cognitive dissonance and self-justification that normal people cannot muster.
The theory of affirmative action's appeared as consequences of movement of civil rights in 60's era. This was to honor the “Equality concept” in America. Then the question arises on the value of meritocracy of the people.
Many people and minorities are opposed to affirmative action because they perceive it as some “social charity" program or management "flier" which creates inferiority in people. This is simply a case of observation. Veterans from the different wars have been accepting monetary and educational remunerations as an effect of the G.I. Bill, whether or not they had knowledgeable combating responsibility, where draftees or had enlisted. Hence affirmative action did not threaten the U.S. value of meritocracy.
