Schooling Experience

Introduction

Schooling experiences differ from person to person. Some have been exploring different time and facing different issues than others. It happens naturally that we use our experiences as a framework for things, however, it is necessary to know about other's experiences so that a person can see schooling with a broader view. For this purpose the student I have interviewed is an African-American. African-American students mostly have different experiences of schooling than white Americans, therefore, one should know the prevailing issues or achievements of both sides.

Discussion

The questions I asked in interview are related to following factors: help and support students get from teachers and other individuals, help and support from family , individual skills and abilities, participation in school activities, behavior for educational achievement and success, and problem-solving strategies.

Comparison of my experiences and interviewee experiences shows that in my school students with high achievements have higher self-concepts of their abilities, students experience more support from teachers, parents, and others, and capable of more problem solving strategies. Same characteristics are related to my interviewee's schooling experiences. However, most of the students in his school face poverty or racial discrimination issues in the society and the school, even then some of those students are capable of successfully coping with school due to their different social and psychological characteristics.

When asked about gender differences, it is observed that in African-American school male students are less active in problem solving than female students. This was described in two ways: first, that female student make more efforts to solve a problem than male students and secondly, female students easily seek help from others than male. There is one significant problem solving strategy between both male and female students in my interviewee experience and that is dealing with conflict with a peer. ...
