Introduction:

The impact of Roman pragmatism in structuring the Western culture and its rationalized concepts is evident from a host of historical, cultural, political and societal elements. This essay shall strive to shed light on those elements constituting our life today that hold a strong association to their Roman parentage. The Roman pragmatism has held deep influences on our daily lives. These influences are so integral to our existing lifestyles and cultures that not many of us trace back to the roots which helped shaped our present. The Roman civilization was one that thrived on sophistication in each of its realms, aiming towards improvement and development. While historians and scholars have argued time and time again regarding the roots of our cultures, shifting relentlessly from Greek to Roman bases, it is worth mentioning here that the impact of Roman pragmatism on our lawful systems and our ideology towards decree, is the most prominent and unavoidable of these so called elements. I have therefore dedicated a considerable portion of this essay towards the impact of Roman law structures on the modern Western legal concepts. The same is also followed by more generic impacts of this famous empire on our present lives. The Western legal law that governs our environment and its controlling factors today derives sufficient inspiration and influences from the Roman pragmatic law and civilization. Historians have argued that the key elements governing this civilization have found an enduring existence in our modern world systems.

Impact on Western Law Structures:

Over centuries Roman literature and pieces of work have held the world in awe as to how developed their frame of thoughts was. What we now term as the Roman Law has grown to become an integral part of our occidental planet, allowing the populations to classify and to identify themselves as nations and has brought forth the perceptions and models of ruling and to be ruled and controlled by the formation of legal entities and structures. The Western culture and law which we abide by in recent times and the characteristics of the same owe a rational foundation to the Roman law. For the Roman's the philosophy towards establishing a legal system is very much analogous to ours. According to Paul Koschaker, Roman law and its influence on the Western world maybe summarized as “A bond by which so often the West is held together.”

The Western world time-honored the Roman law as an amalgam of duality existing between its practices and beliefs and those from the medieval law systems prevalent in ancient society. Continental systems grew to be greatly influenced by the establishment of court systems. Despite the transition towards statute law and its governance in our present times, the basics of a rational judicial configuration whereby the decision making was aided by considering cases and issues prevalent in the society through an authoritative body or organization came from the Roman pragmatism concepts.
