Role and Functions of Law

Introduction

In this contemporary world law plays an integral part in the well-being and proper operations of the society and business. The society need the law to supply to formalize the set of conducts which enforces the rules for setteling disputes (Bushman, 2007). In todays's world law is used as an effective tool for accomplishing the chosen purposes. The most important functions of law are to retain peace, promoting personal freedom, keeping a check on governmental power, Facilitating planning, social justice promotion, environmental protection and economic growth promotion through free competition.

Discussion

The federal system of United States combines a national government and the government of each state. In the federal system the federal government only has limited power to regulate businesses and individuals. The states have comparatively more power to work for the general welfare of the citizens. The congress has the right to collect taxes and to protect the patents and copyrights. The constitution has three major functions:

The first function is to formulize the structure for the federal government.

Dividing specific authorities for the different part of the government.

Protecting the U.S citizens from wrong governmental actions.

Roles of law

Criminal and Civil Law

Criminal law is the law through which the governing bodies prosecute the commitment of crimes by the public. Civil laws are the law which allows private parties to charge lawsuits against each other for their wrongdoings. Example in a case of an accident the criminal law will deal with the person hitting another person and civil law will deal with the lawsuit that the person being hit will charge against the driver.
