Session 3: Communication Skills

The other person was discussing his experience of travelling by sea for the first time in his life, and it was obvious that he was really intrigued by the experience and remembered all the details. He said that the experience was over whelming and he really enjoyed the voyage, rejoicing the silence and the personal time that he got at that place. He got time to read, sun bath and enjoy the sight of the vast expense of the sea, which allowed him to cherish and appreciate the beauty of nature and get impressed by the perfection and flawlessness of environment. I responded using the appreciated verbal skills and tried to imagine the situation myself, thus practicing reflective feeling and responding in an encouraging manner, convincing him to share more experiences with him. Moreover, I nodded a number of times and remain silent during most of the conversation, allowing him to remember the details and share more points. The conversations allowed me to learn that certain experiences can have far reaching impact on the life of individuals and thus become a source of continuous rejoicing and happiness. This implies that these experiences do not only provide temporary relief to the individuals but also cause them to become happy and rejoiced whenever they remember that time.

Session 5: Inner Critic

The three major criticisms noted by the inner critics include:

Self indulgence of the speaker

One sided flow of information

Lack of participation from the side of listener

The three criticisms mentioned caused a few behavioral as well as cognitive effects, including the development of disinterest in the conversation and the feeling that the conversation is getting unduly lengthy. As evident from the points mentioned above, the speaker was so indulged in his own experience and the voyage that he even ignored my existence at a number of instances (Moon, 2006, Pp: 43). I was quite during most of the conversations and thus lost interest after the first few minutes. Thus, the major cognitive change was loss of interest and the diversion of attention, which was combined with the behavioral change: loss of expression of agreement and thus an apparent boredom on face.

Constructive Messages

Self indulgence of the speaker

Development of disinterest

There was a chance for me to imagine the same situation and thus be a part of the journey of the speaker.

One sided flow of information

Lack of communication from my side

I could have participated by sharing my own experiences and ideas instead of remaining quiet and thus would have avoided the one way flow of information.

Lack of participation from the side of listener

Development of boredom and the signs of boredom.

The boredom could have been avoided by participating and attempting to imagine the situation, which would have made the conversation more interesting and intriguing and thus would have avoided the drawbacks.

The conversation bought me to the conclusion that the inner coach as well as the ...
