According to David Hume, “our sympathy is very variable”, means that human beings are distinguished in their level of sympathy they demonstrate to others. There are a number of reason for this difference, we tend to show more love to those who are closer to us, like our friends, family and acquaintances, but lesser to strangers. We naturally tend to care more for those who are closer to us. Sources of these sympathies are the natural love and affection in our hearts which develops over time with by the existence of association and relationships (Hume, pp. 14-17).
