Introduction

The prestigious field of medicine has always fascinated me due to its splendour and the nature of work. They say nursing has been blessed with the power of healing. The intricacy of the work involved in nursing is perhaps what motivates me the most about this wonderful field. The interaction of patients with nurses is perhaps a very strong bond. It was sheer hard work, complemented by ambition that enabled me to reach the level at which I am. Working in the nursing field is one of the most rewarding experiences one can have. Possessing a passion for caring for the sick and needy is perhaps the most significant reason for pursuing a career in this field. As an individual who has this passion I understand the benefits and heartfelt content that comes with being a nurse. There are many men and women who share the same level of passion and kind heartedness that I have. The satisfaction that they get from the smiles and hugs from knowing they helped an individual or family through a hardship or sickness are essentially priceless (Foster, 34-35). Nursing has always attracted me due to the attached dignity and the nature of work. Most of the interaction of patients is with the nurses who care for them, feel their pain, and give them comfort. I believe that the bond that nurses and patients have is much stronger than any other. A patient is much more comfortable with nurses than doctors. It is a common observation that the contribution of the nursing staff in the healing and recovery process of patients is at par with that of doctors. A profession is more than just learning a set number of skills or acting in a particular way. Even though nurses do not have complete autonomy in decision-making and practice, nursing should be considered a profession because it requires an extended education and has a theoretical body of knowledge. No one factor can delineate a job from a profession. Some qualities are such; caring, compassion, a strong desire and willingness to help those in need, patience, and honesty and above all, good health are imperative for one to join this noble profession (Webster, 1-3).
