Introduction

Patient falls continue to be an issue despite of the all the preventive measures taken and extensive care and nursing practices. The problem lies in the view point and for the solution to this very problem; it is the viewpoint that matters. Perspectives of nurses have never been given significant weightage in relation to patient's falls and its prospective solution. Despite the fact that they are the one who spend most of their time in hospitals with patients, they were not incorporated in previous researches for data gathering and analysis.

The clinical problem that led to this study is patient fall rate despite the implementation of various preventive strategies to avert the fall. Relevant studies conducted are usually quantitative which failed to take in the perspective of nurses about the whole scenario. Nurses are on the front-line taking care of patients, they know the obstruction to successful implementation of fall prevention. Yet their views have been given minimal attention. In an attempt to unravel the strategies that could successfully prevent patients' falls or at the least reduce the rate, collaboration between the nursing and institutional level is required. Nurse's perspectives are critical to the resolution of this clinical problem.

The study is significant in a way that a fall usually influences whole routine of the ward. An impact is faced by the entire medical unit rather than the immediate nurse to the patient. First pressure upon the nurse is the extent of injury the patient has received as consequence of falling. Shifting the patient from the place of collapse into the bed may also take longer with the decisions regarding resources required to lift him off floor. Most time-consuming and stressful part is post-fall documentation where nurses could even become liable for a lawsuit if information is improperly furnished. Fall can result in a patient being required to stay longer at hospital to immediate death. Acute Care centers are usually bottleneck centers using full capacity. In order to ward off these issues, this study is important.

The researcher intended to find out through qualitative research using Focus Groups, Acute Care nurse's experiences with patient's falls. It highlights how Fall Risk indicators coupled with interventions sometimes fail to avert the fall. The efficacy of the techniques in use can easily be challenged which prompts the need for more focused strategies. And this is only possible by weighing in nurse's perspectives along with other healthcare professionals.
