The traditional dichotomy in painting between Representation and Abstraction and its resolution in Contemporary painting
Abstract
Research focuses on painting at the level of its procedure and is consequently a mode of examination which seeks to study from painting rather than symbolize it in terms of external interpretative interests. Enchanting as a point of removal the notion that what is at venture for painting is the design of the 'radically new' I have used from the field of biosemiotics in order to examine creativity within formal development. In part this is to argue against the notion that painting is an exhausted observe by investigating how the 'end' is obviated when past and present are implicit to be syntheses of the work rather than as exterior determinations. The main aim and objective of the research is to examine the traditional dichotomy in painting between Representation and Abstraction and its resolution in Contemporary painting. To the scope that the thesis begins with the predominance and specificity of the work it reveals a mode of formalism. Though, through an examination into what is 'at work' in painting, into accurately what cannot be given to illustration, certain methodological givens have been brought into issue.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Definition
According to Tolstoy, art cannot be defined as an activity which produces beauty. Beauty cannot be defined objectively, and therefore cannot be used as a criterion to define what is, or is not, art. The aim of art is not merely to produce beauty, or to provide pleasure, enjoyment, or entertainment. Art is a means of communication, and is an important means of expression of any experience, or of any aspect of the human condition.
Background of the research
At the beginning of the last quarter of the twentieth century, the idea of the avant-garde, which has provided the dynamo for a kind of 'modernist' faith in contemporary art circles, has been severely shaken. The current debate over 'modernism' and 'post-modernism' is a sure indication that something underlying the whole project of the avant-garde has faltered. In the visual arts, this tendency seems to be taking the form, both in the United States and in Europe, of a reawakened interest in painting and specifically of a renewed concern for figuration.
