Introduction

Pablo Picasso was one of the most influential and famous artist of the twentieth century. He was born in Spain in 1881 (O'Brian, 2012). He developed his interest in the field of arts and considered to be the creator of the cubism. Another creator of cubism at that time was Georges Braque. Picasso was not only an artist but a painter of expatriate nature, print maker, sculptor, stage designer and ceramicist. He was recognized as a radical artist due to his work in the field of Cubism and surrealism. The art of Picasso has a significant contribution in the development and progression of modern art in the twentieth century. Some of the famous art works of Picasso includes Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica (O'Brian, 2012).

Picasso introduced the plastic arts during the twentieth century. Marcel Duchamp and Henri Matisse were the other two influential artists who revolutionize the development and progression of arts in twentieth century along with Pablo Picasso. He introduced cubism which is a unique style of painting using the neutral colors and monochrome brownish colors (Levy, 1997). The paintings of cubism by Picasso and Braque were considered as almost same during that time. The cubism was further developed into synthetic cubism which is a kind of collage that is still used in the fine arts. Picasso's contact with the surrealism is depicted in his later works during the time period of 1930s (Penrose, 1981).

This paper discusses the change in the style of Picasso over the years from 1907 when he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon to 1937 when he involved surrealism in his paintings and painted the famous Guernica. The different approaches of Picasso used in both of these paintings is also analyzed.
